SARIKEI: Ten more dialysis machines may be added at the hospital here to meet future demand amid signs of increasing diabetes cases in the division.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said additional dialysis facilities should be prepared as diabetes cases showed signs of rising.
“There are signs that diabetes is increasing. This means dialysis needs to be prepared,” he said in his opening speech at the ‘Sarawakku Sayang’ (SKS) programme here today (Aug 8).
Referring to a suggestion raised earlier, Abang Johari said 10 more dialysis machines could be added in Sarikei.
“So perhaps we can add 10 machines here in Sarikei,” he said.
He said the additional machines could be placed at the hospital so patients would not have to travel far for treatment.
“Placed at the hospital, there is no need for those who suffer from diabetes to travel far,” he said.
Abang Johari also urged the public to take greater care of their diet and exercise regularly to maintain good health.
“Take care of our food. If we can exercise, exercise,” he said.
He referred to the exercise facilities available in the area and encouraged the public to make use of them as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The Premier said maintaining good health was important, as a longer life would have little meaning if accompanied by poor health.
He said staying healthy would allow people to continue contributing to their families, communities and society.
