SARIKEI: A total of 76 students in the district here received the Yayasan Sarawak Local Scholarship amounting to RM60,800, while 964 students received the school uniform assistance worth RM192,800.
The scholarships and school uniform assistance were presented during the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Education Awareness Programme 2025 at Dewan Sentral Sarikei on Saturday, with 70 students present to receive the aid.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also the Sarikei Member of Parliament, officiated at the closing ceremony.
In his speech, he emphasised that such initiatives not only ease the burden on parents but also motivate students to continue striving for excellence in education.
He added that education in Sarawak will enter a new and significant phase in 2026, when the state becomes the first in Malaysia to provide free education at its state-owned universities and higher learning institutions.
“This effort by the state government is proof of its commitment to ensure that the children of Sarawak have access to quality education regardless of background,” he said.
Earlier, the event, organised by the Sarikei District Education Office in collaboration with Yayasan Sarawak, was attended by more than 1,000 people, including parents, students and members of the local community.
