KUCHING: Say it with flowers, the adage goes, and come All Souls Day just about everyone does exactly that.
This is because on All Souls Day, which falls on Nov 2, many people pay their respect at cemeteries by leaving flowers at the graves of their departed loved ones.

On Wednesday (Nov 1) many people were already busy looking for beautiful flowers at the many florists in town.
Ellen Kong, 71, who owns Claire Floral Sdn Bhd which has been selling flowers from more than 30 years felt that sales have improved following the Covid-19 pandemic.
“During the pandemic, everybody stayed home but now we are recovering, we have received quite a number of bookings especially this week,” she said.
On the type of flowers they usually sell for All Souls Day, Ellen said it depends on customers.

“If customers decided to choose roses, we will provide for them, if they choose chrysanthemum, we will also provide for them.
“We usually receive our flowers from Cameron Highlands, Pahang. But at the same time, we also receive flowers from countries such as China and even India.
“Before the pandemic, we usually sold our flowers for RM80 per bouquet, however now with every price going up, we have no choice but to increase our price to RM100 per bouquet,” she said.

“If customers want to add some special flowers, then we will provide for them but the price would be higher.
“It also depends on what kind of flowers the customers want. If they want a great quality of flowers from China for instance, then it would be expensive,” she said.
All things considered Ellen is happy her business has picked up despite higher prices now, the reason being the demand for flowers is still high.

Similarly an employee who wished to be identified as Anthony from S.L Flower and Handcraft Shop in Kenyalang said like any other flower shop, the demands for flowers decreased during the pandemic.

“However, now the demand for flowers is getting higher than ever, we have up to 100 bouquets that had been booked this week alone.
“We are happy that customers want to book flowers from us again, and seeing the situation has improved makes me glad because this gives our business a further boost,” he added.
