KUCHING: The Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) will review its technical procedures and operational protocols following Sunday’s (June 28) crash involving a car and multiple cyclists during the Samarahan Bike Challenge 2026.
SCA said it was deeply concerned by the incident and is currently gathering information on the circumstances surrounding the crash. The association added that it would fully cooperate with the event owner, organiser and relevant authorities in any review of matters within its scope of involvement.
“SCA participated in the event in its capacity as the appointed technical partner, providing commissaires, technical officials and race equipment to facilitate the conduct of the competition.
“Our thoughts are with all riders and individuals affected. We wish those who sustained injuries a full and speedy recovery and we sincerely hope they receive the care and support they need during this time,” it said today (June 30).
It added that rider safety, as well as the welfare of officials, volunteers and road users, must remain the foremost priority at all cycling events.
While stressing that it would be inappropriate to speculate before the relevant facts had been established, SCA said every serious incident presents an opportunity to review existing practices and identify measures to further enhance safety at future events.
Following the completion of the necessary reviews, the association said it would assess whether improvements to technical procedures, event safety standards or operational protocols are needed for future events conducted under its technical support or sanction.
SCA also expressed its appreciation to medical personnel, emergency responders, officials and volunteers who rendered immediate assistance at the scene.
“The Sarawak Cycling Association will continue to place the safety and welfare of the cycling community at the forefront of its efforts and remains committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that cycling events in Sarawak continue to be conducted safely and responsibly,” it added.
