KUCHING: Sarawak is laying the groundwork to transition from semiconductor research to large-scale production, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the state’s strategy is to develop prototypes before scaling up production domestically.
“Once we understand the technology and move from prototype to scaling up, we must analyse the cost.
“And if we have a cost advantage, production can be placed in Sarawak,” he said during Agenda Awani’s talkshow titled ‘Sarawak Strengthens Malaysia’s Semiconductor Industry’ broadcasted via Astro Awani on Tuesday (Sept 30).
Abang Johari referred to X-FAB Sarawak in Samajaya as a model of success, noting that the company now employs about 3,000 workers, 95 per cent of whom are Sarawakians.
“The same approach can be applied to new semiconductors and chips. We can conduct research abroad (London, UK), then bring production back home (Sarawak). ‘Balik kampung’ , as we say,” he added.
To support long-term growth, the Premier said efficient logistics will be critical, with Sarawak’s own airline, Air Borneo, expected to play a dual role in both passenger travel and freight services.
“Air Borneo is not just for passengers. It will also provide freighter services so that we can deliver chips quickly to their destinations. This is part of our long-term plan,” he said.
