KAPIT: Two local women lost a total of RM6,613 after falling victim to an online scam involving individuals impersonating officers from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).
Kapit Police Chief, DSP Rohana Nanu, said both victims, aged 20 and 22, had lodged their reports at the Kapit Police Station on October 3.
The cases are being investigated by the district’s Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID).
“In the first case, the 22-year-old victim was tricked into believing she had won a RM1,000 lucky draw from PTPTN. She was instructed to provide her banking details via a link, resulting in a loss of RM5,009 from her account.
“Meanwhile, in the second case, the 20-year-old victim was deceived by an offer of RM1,000 purportedly from PTPTN if she agreed to activate her ShopeePay account.
“She was later asked to provide three ‘One Time Password’ (OTP) codes, which led to a total loss of RM1,604 from her bank account,” she said.
In light of this, Rohana reminded the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to offers that seem too good to be true on social media.
She also advised them to verify suspicious bank accounts and phone numbers via http://ccid.rmp.gov.my/semakmule/ to check if they have been linked to scam cases previously.
