KUCHING: The Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) backs Sarawak’s Federal Court petition to clarify oil and gas jurisdiction.

The SCCI said the move seeks vital judicial clarification on the constitutional applicability of the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74), the Continental Shelf Act 1966, and the Petroleum Mining Act 1966 within the State.

It also described the petition as a matter of “paramount constitutional and economic significance”.

“Therefore, pursuing an authoritative determination through the Federal Court is a responsible and orderly way to resolve long-standing questions over legislative authority and resource jurisdiction.”

It stressed that oil and gas, as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s economic ecosystem, remains a strategic driver of investment confidence, industrial growth, and sustainable development.

“Clear legal delineation is needed to support long-term capital commitments, give regulatory certainty that influences supply chains and job creation, and foster a more transparent framework for managing Sarawak’s natural resources.”

The chamber emphasised the need for continued, constructive engagement between state and federal authorities, saying collaboration is vital to strengthen Sarawak’s economic interests without compromising the stability of the national investment environment.

As a leading advocate for the business community, SCCI said it remains dedicated to initiatives that promote the clarity, confidence, and sustainable growth required to benefit Sarawak and its people.
