KUCHING: A total of 135 students from Chung Hua Middle School No.3 took part in its annual environmental programme, this time with a slight difference.
The programme officiated by Kuching South City Hall (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng coincided with Earth Day observations which saw them engaging in clean-up activities all around the council grounds.
Themed ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, the environmental programme was organised by the school on Tuesday (April 22).
Sarawak Tribune spoke to the teachers in charge and some students about their thoughts about the environmental programme.

LEE HUI CHUNG, 44 YEARS OLD, TEACHER:
Through this programme, we wanted to fulfill the meaning of April 22, which is Earth Day. Activities like planting, collecting rubbish and cleaning the park are the main agenda for today’s programme, where the students will be contributing to environmental activities.

The hope that I have for today’s programme is that all the students will continue to contribute towards the earth’s greenery and be a responsible adults in thinking ahead of the consequences each act brings to the earth.
RODERICA LING XUEN, 18 YEARS OLD, STUDENT:
For me, today’s programme is all about contributing self-time and energy towards our beloved home, which is the earth. It is a yearly programme that is organised by the school, but I am only able to attend it this year, where it is even more exciting, because apart from attending talks about it like before, we can do outdoor activities like cleaning and learn to practice the 3R; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. So, hopefully through this programme, I can learn more about the environment.
ONG XU XUAN, 18 YEARS OLD, STUDENT:

For me, the programme is about teaching us, especially the young generation about environmental practices that can be done to ensure a better place for all and quality air to breathe.
Honestly, even though the school did organise this event last year, this is the first time I joined and it is very exciting for me, not only can I learn things but also get to love the earth. I hope that programmes like this deliver the message to all that we have the power to decide the earth that we live in, so let us all work for it together.
