SIBU: Mental health is an important aspect that needs to be safeguarded, as it is often overlooked in daily life.
Highlighting this, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Kiang Hin headmaster Ling Ing Kiong emphasised that good mental health enables individuals to cope with stress, build positive relationships, and make wise decisions.
Speaking at SJKC Kiang Hin’s mental health talk programme, held recently at its premises on Jalan Teku here, he enlightened pupils on the importance of maintaining mental health from a young age.
The programme was jointly organised by SJKC Kiang Hin’s Board of Management, the Pasar Teku Neighbourhood Committee (KRT), and the Sibu Mental Health Association.
Ling encouraged the pupils to be brave in sharing their feelings with family members or friends and to seek help when dealing with stress.
“Sharing problems can sometimes lighten the burden we face, and a healthy lifestyle contributes to emotional and mental balance,” he said.
Also speaking at the event was the guest of honour, Sibu Division Unity Officer Jendri Mangku, who expressed hope that such programmes would continue in the future.
“Our children are the future leaders of our nation. Thus, we must shape them into individuals who are mentally healthy,” she said.
The talk was delivered by Dr Wong Siong Teck, head of psychiatry and mental health at Sibu Hospital, who addressed topics such as the definition of mental health, signs of mental health issues, and tips for maintaining good mental health.
Also present was SJKC Kiang Hin’s Board of Management chairman Kapitan So Teck Kee, who also serves as chairman of KRT Teku Market and the Sibu Mental Health Association.
