KUCHING: All educational institutions under the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE) have been urged to step up preparations and implement measures to cope with hot weather as schools reopen following the end of Term 1 holidays.

In a statement, the MoE stressed that schools must take proactive steps to safeguard students’ health and wellbeing amid rising temperatures.

Schools are advised to postpone outdoor activities if temperatures exceed 35 degrees Celsius, monitor any activities that may expose students to extreme heat, and ensure an adequate supply of clean drinking water.

Students are encouraged to bring their own water and to drink sufficient amounts to regulate body temperature.

The ministry also highlighted the need to provide drinking water to boarding students during critical situations where other sources are unavailable, and to maintain close coordination with nearby clinics and hospitals in case of heat-related health complications.

Schools are urged to exercise discretion in granting special permission for students, teachers, and staff to wear appropriate sports attire during extreme heat, based on the specific needs and conditions of each institution.

The MoE reiterated that it takes seriously the health, safety and welfare of all its students and staff, and called on schools to remain alert and follow established guidelines during periods of hot weather.
