KUCHING: Before the group photo, Sarawak’s women’s rugby team slipped into sarongs — a fun little rite of passage to celebrate their debut on the 15s stage.
The women’s team is entering uncharted territory with their 15s debut, guided by seasoned hands and national-calibre talent in Cuthberta Entai, Josie Mavcellina Gone, and Stancy Ling Enggan.
Coach Stephen Patrick, who has been leading preparations since Apr 14, said the squad is eager and motivated ahead of their debut tournament.
“I’m truly grateful that these three offered themselves to serve Sarawak again.
“They’re senior players, and they’ll lead the new ones in the upcoming matches,” he said, referring to the three national players.
The tournament runs from Apr 26 to Jul 7, and Stephen knows it’s a marathon, not a sprint — keeping the team’s bodies and minds in top shape is the name of the game.
“My focus is on maintaining and improving both the physical and mental condition of the players so that we can perform well throughout the tournament.
“I believe in every player I have — we’re capable of putting up a strong fight in this debut campaign,” he told Sarawak Tribune at Kuching International Airport (KIA) last night (Apr 25).
Stephen also gave a nod to the players’ dedication from all corners of Sarawak, saying the current squad earned their spots through sheer commitment and readiness.
“We prioritised those who gave their full commitment. They had the time, the space, and they seized this opportunity.
“The Sarawak Rugby Union gave the team a big opportunity, and the players stepped up,” he added.
Around 28 players have been lined up for each match, with rotation expected to ensure fresh legs throughout the league.
“This is just the beginning — we’re here to show that Sarawak is ready for women’s rugby on the national stage,” he said.
With an excited grin, Stephen shared his enthusiasm—this debut is just the start, and the team is ready to take on the challenge.
