KUCHING: The Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) is planning to upgrade its Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) technology from 4G to 5G in the future as part of efforts to further enhance broadband connectivity.

SDEC chief executive officer Datuk Sudarnoto Osman said the project has reached a good level of implementation but SDEC is already looking ahead to future technological upgrades.

“Yes, we are planning to upgrade MySRBN technology from 4G to 5G in the future and discussions are currently underway on spectrum allocation, which is a key requirement for 5G operations,” he told reporters when met at the SDEC Startup Innovation Showcase 2026 held at TEGAS Digital Village here today.

He noted that without access to the necessary spectrum, 5G services cannot be implemented and negotiations on this matter are currently being handled by SDEC.

Meanwhile, he said about 44,000 homes have been connected through the MySRBN network.

He said that MySRBN currently offers two service packages, namely the basic package using Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology and a fibre-based service introduced last year.

The fibre service, known as MySRBN XL, was rolled out in collaboration with Borneo Restu, and has so far connected approximately 6,000 homes.

During the State Legislative Assembly sitting last year, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said all 600 Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Transformation (SMART) towers are now operational with MySRBN internet services.

According to him, the SMART project implemented by SDEC involves the construction of 618 new telecommunication towers, including 18 repeater towers.
