SEA Games 2027 prep gains momentum

KUCHING: Preparations for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games have received a boost as the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) strengthens cooperation with the Sarawak government following a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (Apr 27).

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the visit marked his first official engagement with the Sarawak leadership, focusing on strategic collaboration and readiness for the regional sporting event.

“As this is our first official visit, we discussed various matters, particularly cooperation between the Federal Government and the Sarawak Government, as well as preparations for the SEA Games 2027,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook.

He said Sarawak will host 17 sporting events during the games, the highest among all participating states.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq also expressed appreciation for the Sarawak government’s strong commitment to ensuring the success of the games.

“I would like to record my appreciation to the Sarawak government for its commitment in making the SEA Games a success, including the provision of excellent sports facilities,” he added, noting that he is scheduled to visit several of the venues.

Also present were State Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, his deputies Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and Datuk Ripin Lamat, as well as the ministry’s permanent secretary Dzulkornain Masron.
