KUCHING: National muaythai athlete, Muhammad ‘Miki’ Mikail Ghazali, kept his nerve to edge Thailand’s Suphakon Sirilun 29-28 in the men’s 57kg final at the 2025 SEA Games in Lumpini Stadium today.
The Rentap Muay Thai Gym fighter was the cleaner operator in the opening two rounds, taking early control with sharp counters and better balance in the exchanges to earn 10-9 verdicts in both.
Suphakon stayed aggressive throughout, closing distance and forcing contact, but was largely kept in check by Miki’s discipline and timing.
The Thai fighter surged in the third round, lifting the tempo and pressing forward to claim it 10-9, turning the final minutes into a tense, close-range affair.
It was an eye-for-an-eye finish, yet Miki’s earlier work proved just enough to see him through by the narrowest of margins.
The bout capped another productive sequence for Malaysia at the iconic venue.
Earlier, compatriot Wassof Rumijam had sprung an upset in the men’s below 54kg final, edging Thailand’s Thongchai Huanak 20-19, after Sabah’s Angie Yan Jia Chi had set the tone with gold in the women’s wai kru event.
