DARO: A 59-year-old man was reported missing after a private boat capsized near Tanjung Sirik, Pulau Bruit, last Thursday morning, throwing two occupants into the sea.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the incident occurred at about 9:00 am while the boat was travelling from Kampung Betanak to Kuala Matu.

One of the victims, Kaharruddin Buang, 42, managed to swim ashore and later informed authorities that his brother-in-law, Aldin Rakli, 59, could not make it to land.

“The distress call reached the Daro fire station at 11:32 am, and our team was deployed to the location about 39 kilometres away.

Rescue teams from multiple agencies get ready to move out for the SAR mission.

“A search and rescue operation was carried out throughout the day with assistance from multiple agencies and villagers,” the department said in a statement.

Bomba said the second day of the search began at 8:30 am on Friday, with teams divided into four sectors covering a two-nautical-mile radius along the shoreline.

The operation was suspended at 5:30 pm due to weather and safety concerns and will resume today.
