MARUDI: A search and rescue operation is underway to locate a 21-year-old Indian national who was reported missing at 7.55 pm on Wednesday (Nov 5) after he was believed to have disappeared in the waters of Sungai Baram near Kampung Kuala Tutoh.

The victim, identified as Prashant, was last seen near the riverbank shortly before the alarm was raised.

Villagers alerted the authorities immediately, prompting the Fire and Rescue Department to mobilise a response team from Marudi.

A four-member crew is conducting coordinated sweeps of the river using an aluminium boat.

The operation is led on site by PPgB Jessbent Jenus, with police also joining the search effort.

Search activities resumed at first light this morning, focusing on downstream and riverbank perimeter checks due to strong currents and limited visibility in the water.

As of today, the victim has not yet been found. The search remains active.

The Fire and Rescue Department has reminded riverine communities to remain cautious, particularly with current water conditions being unpredictable.
