It was reported that both men were returning from an oil palm plantation with a load of harvested fruits when their boat hit a driftwood and sank.

The son-in-law swam to the riverbank, but his father-in-law was swept away by the strong current and has yet to be found.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Sri Aman station were dispatched to the scene, about eight kilometres away, following an emergency call at 10:10 am.

Upon arrival, a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched at the Bayai Water Treatment Plan, focusing on surface searching in the area where the victim was last seen.

Bomba stated that the operation faced challenges due to poor mobile communication coverage and weak government integrated radio network (GIRN) reception.

At the time of writing, the search is ongoing with assistance from the police.
