BINTULU: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) have joined forces to plant approximately 100 trees in support of the Greening Sarawak Campaign, aimed at enhancing biodiversity and mitigating climate change.

The tree-planting initiative included the cultivation of various tree species such as Penaga Lilin, Bucida, and Belian.

The collaboration between SEB and BDA signifies their commitment to transforming BDA into a symbolic green hub, aligning with their shared goal of promoting sustainability.

“This is a strategic collaboration between BDA and SEB as the public have been told that we hope to become a green or low-carbon hub in the future, and it all starts with a tree,” said BDA general manager Datuk Muhamad Yakup Kari.

Speaking at the Tree Planting Programme with SEB/BDA 2023 1.0 here, he expressed BDA’s eagerness to engage in further cooperative and strategic campaigns with SEB, as it aligns with BDA’s strategic focus on promoting sustainable and inclusive communities and transitioning to green growth.

Yakup also announced plans to plant an additional 1,200 trees in the next phase of the program, scheduled for October.

SEB executive vice-president Pramod Kumar Karunakaran highlighted the significance of the Tree Planting Campaign for Habitat Protection and Recovery.

This initiative marked the first collaboration between SEB and BDA outside of their project activities.

Pramod emphasised the importance of BDA’s role in maintaining and safeguarding the planted trees, which is essential for ecosystem recovery, biodiversity enhancement, climate change mitigation, forest conservation, and habitat restoration.

BDA deputy chairman Datuk Haidar Khan Asghar Khan was also present at the event.
