KAPIT: Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing rural education through a series of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including a strategic collaboration with Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kapit.

SEB is supporting the SPM Excellence Workshop and upgrading school facilities, including sponsoring a high-capacity printer, to create a more conducive learning environment and inspire students to achieve academic excellence.

SMK Kapit’s Principal, Jeffry Lias, said the initiative, introduced last year, has begun to yield encouraging results with more students showing improved academic performance.

“So far, six students have achieved straight A’s while another seven recorded excellent results.

“In total, 47 students scored five A’s and above, a significant improvement driven by the motivation and guidance received through the workshop supported by Sarawak Energy,” he told TVS.

He said such collaborations not only benefit students directly but also strengthen the involvement of parents and the local community in building a more holistic and sustainable education ecosystem.

SMK Kapit is targeting a School Average Grade (GPS) of 4.42 for this year’s SPM results, reflecting the effectiveness of the school’s motivation and academic guidance programmes.

Jeffry also expressed hope that SEB would consider adopting SMK Kapit as part of its ‘adopted school’ initiative to enable continuous student and teacher development programmes aimed at empowering rural education.

“Corporate collaborations such as this are crucial, especially for schools in the interior. It is not just about material assistance but also about instilling confidence, determination, and ambition among rural students to reach greater heights,” he said.

The programme, themed ‘Empowering Education and Nurturing Sustainability’, is part of SEB’s ongoing efforts in Kapit, which include educational and environmental awareness campaigns under the Baleh Hydroelectric Project (HEP Baleh).
