MIRI: Authorities in Sarawak have uncovered a significant case of electricity theft linked to an illicit cryptocurrency mining operation in the Eastwood Industrial Estate, located along Jalan Miri Bypass.
The discovery was made during a joint operation between Sarawak Energy’s retail arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), and the local police. Investigators found that the premises had been tapping directly into the main electricity supply, entirely bypassing official metering systems.
The unregistered connection, which supplied power to 28 high-powered cryptocurrency mining servers, is believed to have cost Sarawak Energy nearly RM20,000 per month in stolen electricity. Such setups pose severe risks, including fire hazards, electrocution, and damage to electrical infrastructure, due to their constant and heavy energy demands.
SESCO technicians seized the mining equipment and illegal wiring during the raid. A police report has been filed, and investigations are ongoing. Offenders may face fines of up to RM200,000 or up to five years in prison under Malaysia’s Electricity Ordinance.
Sarawak Energy is urging property owners to remain vigilant, as landlords may be held responsible if illegal power connections are found on their premises. Warning signs include unusually low power bills for continuous 24-hour operations. Smart Meters can help monitor usage via the SEB cares mobile app.
The public is encouraged to report suspected power theft by contacting Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre or using the SEB cares app. All reports will be kept confidential.
