KUCHING: Water reservoir levels at the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) are currently at safe operating levels, according to Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).

In a Facebook posting today (Mar 23) via its virtual customer service assistant ‘Carina’, SEB stated that no controlled water release is being exercised at the Bakun reservoir. The statement was accompanied by an aerial drone video taken on March 22.

The state-owned electric utility company said the Bakun reservoir helps to manage and regulate water levels upstream and downstream of the facility.

“During this rainy period, the Bakun catchment helps to store excess rain water upstream, helping to reduce downstream flooding as a result,” they said.

Following this, SEB urged the public to be cautious of false information circulating online regarding rising water levels allegedly caused by controlled water releases at the Bakun HEP, affecting communities downstream of the Rajang River.

For further inquiries, SEB’s 24/7 Customer Care Centre can be reached at 1300-88-3111 or via the SEB Cares app.
