KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) will get a 25 per cent equity in a joint-venture project to build a hydroelectric plant with its partners in Indonesia.
In stating this, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the hydroelectric plant located in North Kalimantan, Indonesia will supply electricity to an industrial park that is currently being developed.
“This is a hydropower project which will have a capacity of 137 megawatts (MW) of electricity and it will be constructed in a joint venture with a partner in Indonesia.
“SEB has a 25 per cent equity to develop the hydropower project,” he told the reporters after handing over compensations for a development project in Samarahan division at Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan on Monday (March 13).
Awang Tengah, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment added the joint-venture between SEB and its partners in Indonesia is an opportunity to fulfill the Borneo Grid project.
He said that Sarawak has potential in renewable energy and that some areas within the state have been powered by hydropower.
Therefore, he said once hydropower plant is constructed, Sarawak will most certainly be a powerhouse in renewable energy in the region.
He also highlighted that with Indonesia’s new capital, Nusantara, it would have a positive impact on the state with plans for future joint-border development.
“The federal government has agreed to give priority for developments on the borders located in Tebedu, Entikong, Ba’kelalan and Long Midang in Indonesia.
“We will focus on basic infrastructures and increase border trade and conduct planning at the surrounding border areas,” he said.
He and Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Mentarang Induk Hydropower Project (MIHEP) in North Kalimantan on March 1.
The hydroelectric power station at Mentarang River, North Kalimantan will be the largest power station in Indonesia.
