KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), through its operational arm Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), has uncovered two illegal underground power tapping cases at Jalan Kapor and Jalan Stampin Tengah, Kuching.

“SESCO’s meter inspection team revealed that the culprits had concealed direct tapping cables underground to bypass electricity meters and steal electricity. These cables were hidden in concrete near the meter boxes of residential houses.

“Such setups pose significant risks, including electrical fires, electrocution, and damage to infrastructure, endangering nearby communities’ safety and compromising the stability of the electricity supply.

“These illegal connections violate SESCO’s stringent safety standards and threaten public safety. The perpetrators will be investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which imposes penalties of up to RM200,000 and/or five years’ imprisonment,” it said in a press release today (Dec 12).

SEB remains committed to combating power theft across the state and is working with relevant authorities to ensure offenders are prosecuted. Equipped with advanced tools, the utility’s highly trained teams can effectively detect and address cases of electricity theft.

The company encourages the public to report suspicious activities to its Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All reports will be treated confidentially.
