SEBUYAU: The RM12-million Sebangan Acute System Construction project is expected to be completed by July, benefitting about 735 households in the surrounding areas here.
Utility and Telecommunication Minister, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the project is currently 61 per cent complete and will supply up to five million litres of water per day.
He said the new water treatment plant will complement the existing supply from the Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant.
“As a ministry, we represent the Sarawak Government through our agencies, the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd, and we are committed to ensuring access to clean and treated water, especially in rural areas such as Sebuyau and Sebangan.
“That is why we are building this plant at a cost of RM12 million. We hope the supply here will support the existing water from Batu Kitang and help stabilise supply in this area,” he said.
He told reporters this during a work visit to the project site here today (April 30).
Julaihi, who is also the local assemblyman, said the Samarahan Division currently receives about 45 million litres of water per day from the Batu Kitang plant.
He said this includes areas such as Asajaya, Sadong Jaya, Sebangan, Sebuyau and Simunjan.
However, he said authorities continue to face challenges along the distribution system, including leakages and unauthorised water tapping.
“These issues can affect water pressure, especially given the long distance the supply has to travel from Batu Kitang to this area.
“That is why this plant is important as a supporting source and backup to the existing supply,” he added.
