KUCHING: The appointment of 31 Sebuyau District Council members today reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening local governance as an effective and inclusive platform for delivering policies based on the needs of the people.
Sebuyau assemblyman, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said the appointments are seen as a strategic effort by the government to reinforce the structure of local administration through a combination of qualified, committed individuals representing various zones and backgrounds.
“This move aligns with the government’s aspiration to build an inclusive and responsive administration that addresses grassroots needs.
“As the frontliners of the local authority, council members must equip themselves with a deep understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
“Close cooperation and a ground-level approach are vital to grasp the realities faced by the community,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the swearing-in ceremony for the Sebuyau District Councillors for the April 1 to March 31 2028 term at Grand Margherita Hotel here today.
Previously, the State Executive Council had approved the appointment of council members for the Sebuyau District Council, effective from April 1 until to March 31 2028.
Meanwhile, this swearing-in ceremony marks a historic first, as Sebuyau now officially has its own district council.
In this regard, Julaihi, who is the Utility and Telecommunication Minister, reminded the council members to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and integrity in every action and decision.
He added that a comprehensive understanding of the District Council’s role is crucial not only for drafting policies and making decisions based on local needs, but also for ensuring the smooth and effective implementation of development and public service delivery.
“Council members must act as proactive policy designers, closely monitor development projects within their respective zones, and serve as a bridge between government policies and the realities faced by local communities,” he said.
He stressed that each council member must remain open to public voices, present data-driven proposals, and align community interests with the government’s development agenda.
During the event, Julaihi also expressed his appreciation to the District Officer, Council Secretary, representatives from the Sebuyau assemblyman’s office, and the organising committee for their commitment and cooperation in making the programme a success.
“This appointment is not merely symbolic but a significant trust that must be carried out with full responsibility.
“I urge all council members to maintain integrity, strengthen team spirit, and always prioritise the people’s interests,” he said.
Julaihi emphasised that every action and decision made by the council members has a direct impact on the well-being of the people in the district.
