ISTANBUL, Turkiye: The second-largest political group in the European Parliament (EP) on Wednesday staged a protest calling for the suspension of the European Union’s (EU) partnership agreement with Israel, Anadolu Ajansi reported.
Gathering inside the EP building in Brussels, Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) lawmakers held signs reading “Suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement Now!” as they urged stronger action by EU institutions over developments in West Asia.
In a statement accompanying the protest, the group said the European Council “must suspend the EU-Israel association agreement!”
The group also shared a photo from the protest on social media platform X, calling for more measures.
“Immediate sanctions on violent settlers in the West Bank. The creation of a Palestinian state must be the EU’s unwavering priority, starting with (the) reconstruction of Gaza. Israel must stop military operations in Lebanon,” the photo was captioned.
The EU–Israel Association Agreement, in force since 2000, sets the framework for political dialogue, trade and cooperation between the EU and Israel.
Issues such as Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza and occupiers’ violent and illegal land grabs in the West Bank have led many in the bloc to question why Israel should get preferential treatment. – BERNAMA-ANADOLU
