KOTA SAMARAHAN: The construction of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road under Package D3C, which connects the route from Sejingkat Bridge to Batang Samarahan Bridge, is progressing steadily.

It is being closely monitored to ensure it is completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, said the project’s physical progress currently stands at 23.09 per cent compared to the original schedule of 23.13 per cent — a minimal gap of 0.04 per cent following an extension of time (EOT) review.

“Although there is a slight delay, the project remains under control.

“We constantly monitor field implementation to ensure any issues are addressed promptly,” he said after a site visit here yesterday.

He noted that one of the main challenges currently faced is the supply of sand for embankment formation, which requires a substantial amount to complete the planned road route.

“We have urged the contractor to increase the supply rate of sand because delays in this aspect will impact the overall schedule.

“We want to ensure this project does not become a problematic one,” he stressed.

In addition to material supply, several technical issues such as utility relocation and design changes have also contributed to minor delays, but follow-up actions are being implemented.

He added that Package D3C is part of the Sarawak Second Trunk Road Project to connect the areas between Batang Sejingkat Bridge and Batang Samarahan Bridge, covering a stretch of 17 kilometres, valued at over RM100 million.

“Of that total, seven kilometres are currently under development under Package D3C, while the remaining 10 kilometres fall under other packages within this project.

“This project serves as an important alternative route to support the existing road network. It not only improves access between Kuching and Samarahan, but also forms part of a route that will eventually connect Sadong, Sebuyau, and up to Betong,” Aidel explained.

He also revealed that this will play a major role in opening access to future development areas, including Tanjong Embang and the deep-sea port.

“The route from Tanjung Bako to Batu Belat, then to Beliung and Tanjong Embang in Semilang Beradek has been approved.

“This is one of the strategic links planned to support the development of the new port and airport,” he said.
