KUCHING: A factory security guard was sentenced to five years in prison and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here for possessing sharp weapons in a public place without valid permission.
Ahmad Noor, 34, from Lundu, pleaded guilty before Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar to possessing a knife and a samurai sword without authorisation.
The offence was committed in front of a 24-hour convenience store at Jalan Ban Hock at 6:45 pm on November 8.
According to the charge, Ahmad was found in possession of the weapons without valid permission, an offence under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
The section provides for imprisonment of not less than five years and not more than 10 years, and whipping, upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, police had inspected a suspicious Proton Preve parked in front of the convenience store during the incident.
The vehicle, owned by the accused, contained a knife on the front seat and a samurai sword on the back seat.
Ahmad was subsequently arrested, and the weapons were seized as case exhibits.
Investigations confirmed that he had no valid authorisation to possess the weapons in a public area.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid, prosecuted, while Ahmad was unrepresented.
