KUCHING: Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) brought Chinese New Year (CNY) cheer to 42 children from the Society for Parents of Children with Special Needs (Pibakat) Centre during ‘Love-In-A-Box’ programme yesterday.
SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Hussain said although the programme was simple in nature, the happiness that it brought to the children was enormous.
“It is heartening to see that each year, this programme has been well-received by members of the public who support this charitable event that aims to bring happiness to the children.
“We hope our small contributions can alleviate the plights of the less fortunate members of the society,” he said.

The programme, first launched in 2,000 and organised annually since 2004, was one of SEDC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda.
Other initiatives which SEDC Sarawak and its subsidiary companies have undertaken as part of CSR are Majlis Belaian Kasih, Breaking of Fast with orphans at Peryatim, Majlis Ramah Tamah with primary school students around Kuching and Gotong Royong (work party).
Aziz urged the organising committee to consider promoting next year’s Love-In-A-Box campaign using the various social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WeChat.
“Through the use of the Internet, perhaps more people would want to support our programme and to enable more generous members of the public to do their part in this charitable initiative,” Aziz said.
He continued, “Charity knows no boundaries especially in today’s world which is going through the digital transformation at a fast rate. Therefore, I hope everyone can play a part in spreading the news and enhance the awareness of the public on the greater need for a civil society that is sympathetic with and supportive of the underprivileged.”
The guests were entertained with a lion dance performance, stage shows and high tea.
Also present were Pibakat president Zaidi Ahmad, SEDC general manager Abdul Hadi Abdul Kadir, SEDC corporate services sector deputy general manager Rakayah Hamdan and SEDC commercial sector deputy general manager Edwin Abit.
