KUCHING: SEGi College Sarawak’s Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the SEGi Moot and Law Society (SMLS), held its signature event, “Gowning the Future”, on June 24, showcasing the importance of legal attire and tradition while reaffirming SEGi’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
The event was graced by four distinguished guests: senior legal practitioner and officiating guest of honour Francis Teron Kadap, along with Benedict Yeo Wei Hup, Natalie Woon Yee Ching, and Nicky Klinsky, who are members of the legal community.
A highlight of the event was the symbolic unveiling of a fully robed mannequin, now permanently displayed in the Moot Court to represent the transition from theory to tradition.
The ceremony began with a ribbon-cutting by Francis, followed by the ceremonial removal of the cloth, revealing the mannequin in full legal attire.
In his keynote address, he delivered a candid and inspiring speech to the aspiring lawyers.
“Legal knowledge can be used as a sword to kill or a shield to protect the innocent.
“While morality cannot be legislated, our behaviour can be regulated. Therefore, be mindful of your ethics when performing your duties.”
The ceremony included the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the honoured guests by Sathiswaran Sathiasegaran, lecturer and advisor to SMLS, followed by a commemorative plaque presentation by both Sathiswaran and SMLS president Muhammad Zin Kamal Veerasamy, marking the legacy and significance of the occasion.
