KUCHING: Educators and literacy advocates across Malaysia and beyond are gearing up for a groundbreaking event as early bird registration opens for the Sarawak English Literacy Conference (SELC) 2025.

The conference, which will run from September 17 to 19, will be hosted at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here.

It is expected to draw participants from across the education sector, both locally and internationally.

This landmark event is the first in Malaysia to connect English literacy with STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – aligning closely with Sarawak’s vision of building a future-ready and globally competitive workforce.

Organised by Place Borneo and the Layar Education Development Committee (LEDC), the conference enjoys the backing of several key institutions, including the Education, Innovation and Talent Development Ministry (MEITD), the Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Ministry (KPWK), the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS), and Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).

“The Sarawak English Literacy Conference (SELC) 2025 will be a platform where the power of language meets the innovation of STEM,” said the organising committee in a statement.

“Our goal is to spark transformative conversations and equip educators with tools to integrate literacy and STEM effectively in the classroom, thereby strengthening Sarawak’s education system,” it said.

Early bird registration is now open and will run until 31 May 2025.

Malaysian delegates can enjoy a discounted rate of RM300, while international participants can register at USD300.

Spots are limited and expected to fill quickly.

SELC 2025 will feature a stellar line-up of international and local experts.

Among the keynote speakers is Sarah Dagnell, a veteran educator and professional development leader from STEM Learning UK.

Known for her hands-on approach and impactful training programmes, Dagnell brings over 14 years of experience in primary science education.

Joining her is Sara Wernham, co-author of the globally renowned Jolly Phonics programme.

Her work has revolutionised early literacy instruction, and her expertise will be a key highlight for educators seeking to deepen their understanding of phonics-based instruction and literacy development.

Designed for teachers, education leaders, researchers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and community stakeholders, SELC 2025 promises to be a valuable opportunity to exchange best practices, discover new teaching strategies, and form partnerships aimed at improving education outcomes in the region.
