KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two foreign men, who unknowingly purchased a stolen motorcycle, were detained to assist in a police investigation that led to the arrest of a local seller.
District police chief Supt Damataries Lautin said the duo were detained during ‘Op Lejang’ on Wednesday while shopping at a supermarket along Jalan Ketitir, Batu Kawa.
Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the foreigners, a 31-year-old, had been looking for a vehicle to use for work when he came across a Facebook post in mid-April advertising a bicycle for sale.
“He contacted the 28-year-old local seller regarding the bicycle, but was told it had already been sold. The seller then offered him a red and black Yamaha motorcycle instead.
“Both parties met in person on April 30 at around 4 pm to negotiate the sale. The buyer, who was accompanied by his 35-year-old friend, agreed to purchase the motorcycle, paid a RM250 deposit and took the vehicle home for daily use,”he said in a statement.
Damataries added that the buyer was unaware the motorcycle was reported stolen, and the other foreigner was only accompanying his friend to purchase the motorcycle.
Following this, the seller was arrested and is expected to be charged under Section 379A and Section 414 of the Penal Code for motorcycle theft and assisting in the concealment of stolen property.
“Both foreigners, who have valid passports and work permits, will assist in the investigation and are expected to be prosecution witnesses in the case,” he said.
