KUCHING: Anticipation is rising in the coastal town of Sematan as organisers gear up for the return of its famed 40-horsepower boat race, the centrepiece of the Sematan Festival 2025.
Slated to run from 26 to 27 July, the high-octane competition will once again be the marquee attraction of the three-day celebration beginning 25 July.
Held biennially, this year’s edition carries the theme “Sematan Nature Paradise”, highlighting the region’s idyllic beaches, verdant mountains, and growing reputation as a destination for both eco-tourism and cultural heritage.
Tens of thousands are expected to descend upon the seaside enclave for a weekend of sport, music, and community festivity.
Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan, speaking at a press conference on Monday (14 July), described the boat race as the “signature event” of the festival.
“This is the event everyone looks forward to. We’re expecting around 10 to 20 teams in the 30 to 40 horsepower category,” he said, noting that unlike the recent race in Kapit which featured 80hp vessels, Sematan will keep its focus on more modest — yet thrilling — powerboats.
Beyond the waves, this year’s festival promises a wide-ranging slate of competitions and attractions. A duathlon, deep-sea fishing expedition, badminton tournament, e-sports challenges, and traditional tug-of-war will be featured, drawing local and international participants alike.
The badminton doubles competition has already sparked interest from Indonesian athletes, buoyed by a RM4,000 prize for the champions. Meanwhile, teams from Brunei and Sibu are tipped to join the tug-of-war contest, a staple of community camaraderie and rivalry.
Alternating biennially with the Regata Batang Kayan (or Pesta Lundu), the Sematan Festival has steadily grown in scale and scope. With each edition, it cements its role not just as a celebration of local culture and nature, but also as a stage for Sarawak’s dynamic sporting spirit.
