KUCHING: The coastal areas of Lundu and Sematan are being considered as potential sites for sailing events in Sarawak, following their naturally suitable geography and calm sea conditions at certain times of the year.
Tanjong Datu assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, said discussions have already taken place with relevant parties, including the Sarawak Sports Corporation, although the proposal remains at an early planning stage.
“Areas such as Kuala Sematan and Kampung Pugu have been identified as suitable locations for water-based sports, especially due to their wide coastal stretches and direct access to the sea,” he said at a press conference held in conjunction with the Rimbun International Sematan Run 2026 here today.
He added that the team is assessing whether development should begin from Kampung Pugu or around Sematan itself, noting that the relatively gentle beach gradient makes the area suitable for sailing-related infrastructure.
Azizul also pointed out that Sematan-Lundu offers periods of calmer sea conditions, along with less congested road access, making it suitable for high-intensity water sports such as sailing and triathlon.
The initiative, he said, aligns with the state’s push to strengthen community-based sports development while expanding opportunities to host state and international-level events outside major urban centres.
“We are not only looking at running events and triathlons. Sailing also has strong potential here. If properly developed, this could become one of Sarawak’s key water sports hubs,” he added.
He also noted that Sarawak has successfully hosted several water sports events previously, including the recent Borneo 100 Triathlon which drew international participants, demonstrating Sematan’s capability as an endurance sports venue.
Azizul added that the proposal is currently undergoing further technical review before any implementation decisions are made.
