KUCHING: The construction of a new matriculation college in Sematan has been approved and is expected to become a key pre-university education hub in Sarawak, offering places for up to 1,500 SPM school leavers from across the state.

Tanjong Datu Assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, said the RM700-million project will be built on a 40-acre site that has already been identified, with completion expected within 24 months.

He added that the college, which will bring more than 2,000 people into the area, is set to generate positive economic growth for the local community.

“Much of the approval process is completed and we are now in the final stages of determining the building design and other details.

“Site inspections have been carried out, land compensation has been settled, and meetings with the Land and Survey Department have taken place.

“From what I’ve been informed, the tender process is expected either at the end of this year or early next year,” he was quoted as saying in a TVS report after officiating at the closing ceremony of Pesta Sematan 2025 recently.

Azizul also expressed hope that the federal government would support efforts to improve public services and hospitality infrastructure in Sematan through three key projects: a new Lundu Hospital, a RELA Volunteer Training Centre, and a new police station.

“There are three federal government projects we hope to see implemented in Sematan. First is the new Lundu Hospital. The current hospital is over 80 years old, and we truly hope for a replacement. A site next to CENTEXS has already been identified.

“We also hope the federal government will assist in constructing a RELA training centre in the same area, under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Most recently, as the elected representative, I urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to consider the urgent need for a new police station in Lundu. The current station is in poor condition and has been in operation since the 1980s with no significant upgrades,” he said.
