KUCHING: About 110 guests attended an iftar gathering hosted by Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim at Raia Hotel & Convention Centre Kuching today (Mar 14).
The gathering brought together representatives from Saberkas Batu Kitang branch, Community Leaders and Village Chiefs (Ketua Masyarakat dan Ketua Kaum, KMKK) from the Batu Kawa constituency, members of the media, as well as representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and several government agencies.
Among the notable guests present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang, and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap.
Ahmad said gatherings such as the majlis bersungkey had been a tradition he had practised for more than 20 years in different capacities and at various locations around Kuching.
“The main purpose is to strengthen bonds and foster understanding among people from different races, religions, NGOs, community leaders, and government agencies,” he said.
He added that such gatherings were not new in Sarawak, where leaders had long used festive occasions as a platform to bring communities together and strengthen unity.
“In Sarawak, we do not simply live together — we celebrate together. Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Gawai and Christmas are celebrated joyfully by our communities regardless of race or religion. This is something very precious that we must cherish and preserve for future generations,” he said.
Sharing about his background, Ahmad said his own family reflected the diversity of Sarawak society.
“I come from Melanau-Iban heritage, while my late father was of Melanau-Malay descent. My late father was a Muslim, while my mother is Catholic. My wife is of Hispanic descent with Colombian heritage and was also raised in the Catholic faith,” he said.
He added that growing up in a multicultural and multi-religious family strengthened his belief that diversity was a strength that helped build understanding and respect among communities.
Ahmad expressed hope that the spirit of unity, harmony, and mutual respect that Sarawak prides itself on would continue to be preserved so that future generations can continue to enjoy a peaceful and prosperous state.
