PADAWAN: A senior citizen in her 60s lost approximately RM250,000 after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme.
Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata, said the victim, a local trader based in Padawan, has lodged a police report on the incident after realising she had been duped.
“In mid-February, the victim stated that she had been browsing on Facebook and was attracted by an investment advertisement offered by an international company.
“Interested, the victim proceeded to contact the administrator of the investment group.
“Drawn by the promise of high returns within a short period of time, the victim was instructed to download an application called ‘Mycdtl’ to begin investing,” he said in a statement last night.
Believing the scheme to be legitimate, he said the victim proceeded to make several staged transfers totalling RM250,000 into an account provided by the suspect.
“However, suspicions arose when she attempted to withdraw the profits but was unsuccessful.
“The suspect then demanded further payments before the ‘commission’ could be released from the investment,” he said.
