Sept 16 marks true unity of Malaysians, says Bawang Assan rep

SIBU: Sept 16 is considered to be the date that truly unites all Malaysians as one race and one nation, says Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.

According to him, the celebration of National Day on Aug 31 is an important moment in the history of the Federation of Malaya, while Sept 16 is a historic moment that united Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah in the formation of Malaysia.

“Aug 31 is a historic day for the Peninsular, and we in Sarawak also celebrate it as a sign of togetherness.

“However, Sept 16 is the date that truly unites us all as a nation,” he said at the Dudong Area National Day Fishing Competition held at the riverbank of Sg Rajang near Sg Durin here last Sunday (Aug 31).

Also present was Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) branch chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew.

The event is organised by the Durin Community Association in collaboration with the Durin Area Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

Wong stressed that a correct understanding of the two dates can foster a spirit of unity and appreciation for the journey of building the Malaysian nation.

In the relaxed event attended by local residents from various walks of life, he praised the efforts of the organisers as a people-friendly approach in fuelling national spirit.

“It is great that we celebrate the national month together, not only with flags and parades, but also with an activity that is close to the people’s hearts, namely fishing,” he said, describing all participants as winners because expressing the spirit of unity.

Wong called on all levels of the people to continue to appreciate the history of the formation of the country and maintain the spirit of unity for a more glorious future for Malaysia.

The fishing competition is part of the Dudong Area National Month celebration and is seen as a platform to strengthen ties between local communities in an atmosphere of harmony and patriotic spirit.
