KUCHING: The Serembu constituency is unlikely to be affected by the ongoing delineation process to determine any proposed new seats in the Bau area.
Serembu assemblyman Datuk Miro Simuh said preliminary indications suggest that boundary adjustments, if implemented, would more likely involve neighbouring constituencies such as Tasik Biru, Opar and Tanjung Datu rather than Serembu.
“Based on what we understand so far, Serembu may not be impacted by the delineation exercise. However, areas like Tasik Biru, Opar and Tanjung Datu are more likely to be involved if there are changes.
“If it happens, some part of the Tanjung Datu area may be taken while some of the area in Opar will be roped into the new seat,” he said.
Miro explained that the proposed increase in seats under the recent expansion of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly—from 82 to 99—will be decided by the Election Commission (EC), which has the final authority to determine the boundaries after conducting ground studies and public consultations.
“Any decision on the creation of new seats in Bau has yet to be finalised. The process is ongoing, and nothing has been confirmed.
“But generally, the focus appears to be on constituencies with higher population growth and development needs,” he said.
He noted that Tasik Biru, being a rapidly developing area within Bau district, could see adjustments to its electoral boundaries to ensure more balanced representation.
Similarly, Opar may also be considered in the exercise due to demographic and geographical factors.
Serembu itself was carved out from Bengoh during the last redelineation in 2015, and a similar restructuring pattern, where boundary adjustments or a split could occur to form a new seat is unlikely.
Miro also stressed that any proposed changes would follow due process and include consultations with relevant stakeholders and the public.
The delineation exercise, typically undertaken by the Election Commission of Malaysia, is expected to shape electoral boundaries ahead of future state elections.
While Serembu may remain unaffected, any changes involving Tasik Biru and Opar or even Tanjung Datu could still influence the broader political landscape in Bau.
Further announcements are expected once the review process reaches a more advanced stage.
