KUCHING: The vision of turning Serian into a “mini New Zealand” cannot be achieved by the Serian District Council (SDC) alone.

SDC chairman Datuk Peter Minos stressed the need for coordinated efforts between tourism and agriculture authorities.

He said while SDC is ready to play its role in boosting tourism, its jurisdiction does not extend to agricultural development, particularly cultural agriculture, which is a key component of the proposed transformation.

“SDC can help develop and promote tourism by planning and implementing natural attractions in Serian. However, agriculture and cultural agriculture fall outside our scope.

“Let SDC handle the tourism part and the agriculture department handle the other part.”

The proposal to model Serian after New Zealand was previously highlighted by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who envisioned the district leveraging its natural landscapes and rural charm to emulate the success seen in the island nation.

New Zealand is globally recognised for its thriving tourism industry, driven by scenic highlands, eco-tourism and well-preserved natural environments alongside a strong agricultural sector that integrates modern farming with cultural heritage.

Minos noted that to replicate such success, a clear division of responsibilities is essential.

He said the agriculture department should spearhead efforts in developing cultural agriculture while SDC focuses on enhancing tourism infrastructure and attractions.

“We have been in discussions with the agriculture department to align our efforts. This must be a coordinated initiative if we are serious about achieving the Premier’s vision.”

He also pointed out that Serian holds strong potential in both sectors.

The district’s rolling hills, lush greenery and relatively untouched natural environment make it an attractive destination for eco-tourism.

At the same time, its agricultural base and local traditions offer opportunities for developing cultural agriculture experiences similar to those found in New Zealand.

Adding momentum to the initiative is Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development (Commodity and Regional Development) Datuk Martin Ben, who hails from Serian.

Minos said Martin, who is also the Kedup assemblyman, has been actively advocating for the development of the district, particularly in strengthening its agricultural capabilities to complement tourism growth.

“With the right collaboration and leadership, Serian can move closer to realising this vision. But it must be a shared effort.”
