KUCHING: Malaysia’s para powerlifting star, Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, has embarked on a new chapter in life after officially marrying his long-time partner Clarissa Jude at the Serian National Registration Department (JPN) on Tuesday (Oct 21).

The ceremony was witnessed by JPN Sarawak staff and family members who joined in celebrating the couple’s special day.

In a statement, JPN Sarawak extended its heartfelt wishes, saying, “May the bond formed today remain steadfast till eternity, filled with love, honesty and blessings. Every smile on this joyous day marks the start of a beautiful journey together.”

At 26, the Serian strongman stands as one of Malaysia’s most accomplished para athletes.

He created history by winning the nation’s first Paralympic gold medal in powerlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Games with then world record of 228kg lift, before successfully defending his title at Paris 2024 with a new world record of 232kg in the men’s below 72kg category.

He also captured gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and several world-level events.

As he steps into married life, Bonnie is expected to channel the same strength and discipline that define his career into this new journey.

Fans of the athlete believe the “power of love” will further inspire him to achieve more, both in sport and as a role model for the next generation of Malaysian athletes.
