MOSCOW, Russia: Seven people have been killed and more than 40 others injured after an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood export facility in southern India, according to local media today, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

The incident occurred in the village of Kannigaipair in the state of Tamil Nadu, The Times of India reported.

Most of the facility’s staff were migrant workers, predominantly women, the report said.

About 120 workers were on the premises at the time of the incident despite it being a holiday, the newspaper added.

The leak, which originated at the seafood processing unit and spread across the premises, killed seven workers, while more than 40 others were hospitalised with breathing difficulties and bleeding from their mouths and noses, the report said. – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK/ RIA NOVOSTI
