KUCHING: Sarawak continues to strengthen its position as a leader in green energy in the region with the signing of seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth more than RM200 million during the EIC CONNECT Energy Borneo 2025 event.

The MoU signing ceremony, witnessed by Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, reflects the industry’s strong commitment to accelerating the state’s sustainable energy agenda, particularly in hydrogen production.

“These agreements demonstrate the industry’s confidence in Sarawak’s potential as a green energy hub, especially in hydrogen technology.

We are committed to continuing the development of infrastructure and ecosystems that support the transition to sustainable energy,” he said in a statement yesterday (Feb 27).

The conference, which brought together more than 1,000 participants, 46 exhibitors, and 80 industry experts, also featured SEDC Energy’s presentation on the development of the Rembus Hydrogen Plant, which is expected to be operational by 2025.

Sarawak’s first electrolyser plant, which began operations in June 2024, is also expected to accelerate hydrogen adoption in transportation, including Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) and hydrogen buses.

Apart from green energy, the conference also discussed the redevelopment of brownfield oil and gas fields, where PETRONAS Carigali shared its success in completing more than ten infill projects over the past four years.

“Expertise in seismic data monitoring and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) have also helped improve operational efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.

“To ensure the sustainability of future energy, the issue of skilled workforce shortages was also raised.

“Initiatives such as the PETROS gas engineering programme, ESG Academy, and CENTEXS are among the key efforts to produce highly skilled talent in the new energy industry,” he said.
