SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has once again proven its academic and research excellence, with seven of its lecturers recognised in the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2025 list.

This prestigious recognition highlights the university’s ability to nurture world-class expertise and reinforces its standing on the global academic stage.

According to UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, the recognition reflects the university’s commitment to producing internationally competitive educators and researchers, ensuring that students receive high-quality and impactful education.

“We want our graduates to not only gain knowledge but also to acquire meaningful research experience so they can contribute to society,” he said.

Ahmad Hata emphasised that the achievement underscores UNIMAS’ strong contribution to the global scientific community and its ongoing dedication to innovation and impactful research.

He expressed hope that more lecturers would follow in the footsteps of the recognised researchers in the coming years.

The World’s Top 2% Scientists list is an authoritative global ranking published by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier.

It identifies the world’s most influential researchers using a composite citation score, which measures the impact and reach of their scientific work.

The evaluation is based on data from the Scopus database.

The selection process, first introduced in 2019, employs a rigorous and transparent methodology. Key indicators include the number of citations, h-index (a metric for research productivity and impact), and performance in high-impact research.

By considering these factors, the list provides an important benchmark for recognising significant contributions across various scientific fields and sub-disciplines.

This latest recognition places UNIMAS researchers among a distinguished global community of scientists whose work has shaped and influenced the advancement of science and technology.

For the university, it is also an endorsement of its strategic focus on strengthening research culture and creating solutions that address real-world challenges.

The achievement further cements UNIMAS’ role as a vital hub of innovation and academic excellence in Malaysia and the wider region.

With a growing portfolio of impactful research and an emphasis on international collaboration, the university is well-positioned to inspire future generations of scholars and researchers.

As Ahmad Hata noted, this success is both a source of pride and a call to action.

“Our aspiration is to continue nurturing talents who will not only excel in academia but will also drive societal progress through science and innovation,” he added.

The recognition of these seven researchers is expected to inspire other academics within UNIMAS to aim for similar global accolades, reinforcing the university’s mission to remain at the forefront of research and education.
