BINTULU: The ongoing sewage overflow issue around the J5 Commercial Centre and Peace Village has sparked concern among residents and affected business owners, prompting them to lodge complaints with the relevant authorities.
The problem, reported at four different locations, has not only disrupted daily comfort but also negatively impacted business operations that rely on regular customers in the area.
Following the complaints received, Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming, conducted a site inspection together with the Tanjong Batu Constituency Service Centre team and representatives from the Bintulu Division of the Sarawak Sewerage Services Department (SSD).
“Residents and business operators have expressed their dissatisfaction over this prolonged issue which has yet to see a resolution.
“Some businesses have been forced to suspend operations due to the unbearable stench and unpleasant conditions. This is a very serious matter and must be addressed urgently,” Pang stressed.
He further explained that Bintulu SSD had informed him the previous contractor failed to resolve the issue effectively, and a new tender process is currently underway to appoint a replacement contractor.
However, several procedural steps still need to be completed before repair works can commence.
“I urge that this process be expedited. The people should not have to continue suffering due to such a fundamental issue.
“We also recommend that a temporary solution be implemented immediately to ease the burden on the affected residents,” he added.
He assured that his office will continue to closely monitor the situation until a comprehensive solution is implemented by the responsible authorities.
