TERENGGANU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) recently participated in the Honorary Wildlife Ranger Turtle Conservation Training with the Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU) at Chagar Hutang, Redang Island.

The four-day, three-night programme involved 16 participants, led by Head of the Conservation, Education and Training Division, Bistari Mahmood, and supported by Wildlife Officer Sophia Sik Sze Yong.

In a statement on Facebook, SFC said the participants included Honorary Wildlife Rangers (HWR) from Lundu-Sematan, as well as rangers from Tanjung Datu and Talang-Satang national parks.

Rangers from Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary and Gunung Gading National Park also took part, along with representatives from the Lundu and Sematan district offices.

Guided by SEATRU marine biologist Fatini and her team, the training introduced conservation methods that differ from those practised in Sarawak, while also highlighting Chagar Hutang’s eco-tourism model.

“The approach is expected to inspire the Lundu-Sematan HWR group to develop small and medium enterprise (SME)-based projects linked to turtle conservation efforts in Kampung Pugu.

“Knowledge gained will further strengthen community conservation and contribute to rural transformation initiatives,” the statement added.
