KUCHING: Sheamus Chew Heng Yi made a remarkable impression at the 51st Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championship after breaking the 1,500 metres freestyle record today (Feb 7).
Clocking at 18:40.37, Sheamus Chew surpassed the previous record of 18:42.96, set by Bong Yi Xiang in 2024.
The young swimmer, clearly taken aback by his achievement, admitted that he did not anticipate breaking the record but was understandably thrilled by the result.
“I did not think I could break it, but I managed to
“I simply swam at my own pace. Coach Frederick advised me to maintain a steady rhythm and avoid starting too fast, or I risked tiring myself out,” he remarked with a smile.
As Sheamus beamed with joy, surrounded by friends and coaches, his achievement at the championship was all the more significant.
In addition to his triumph in the 1,500 metres freestyle, Sheamus also claimed victory in the 200m Individual Medley for Men’s Group 3 (ages 12-13).
Looking ahead, his next challenge is the 100m butterfly, which he described as his favourite event.
Sheamus’s dedication and the guidance of his coach have played a pivotal role in his success, firmly establishing him as a promising talent within Sarawak’s swimming community.
