KUCHING: Before the pressure of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) stage arrives, Sarawak’s young rhythmic gymnasts are set to test their skills against some of the best at the Shenzhen Futian Cup RG Elite International Competition in China.

The competition, which runs from July 15 to 21, serves as a crucial preparation platform for the five elite rhythmic gymnastics (RG) athletes as they gear up for SUKMA Selangor 2026.

Leading the Sarawak contingent are team manager, Bong Swee Suan, and coach Angelina Zorina, together with a sports development officer (SDO) and five elite gymnasts, who are aiming to gain valuable international exposure while strengthening their competitive readiness.

The Sarawak Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGYMA) in a statement said the international competition would provide an important opportunity for the athletes to gain high-level exposure, improve their routines, and build confidence ahead of the national multi-sport event.

SAGYMA added that competing against strong international participants would help the gymnasts sharpen their technical execution, develop mental resilience, and better understand the demands of elite-level competition.

“The Shenzhen Futian Cup provides the gymnasts with a platform to refine their routines, improve consistency, and strengthen their overall performance as they continue preparations for SUKMA Selangor 2026,” the statement read.

Beyond chasing medals, the meet is viewed as a valuable learning experience for the young athletes as they aim to maximise every opportunity on the international stage.

With the guidance of Bong and Angelina, the Sarawak squad hopes to return from Shenzhen with greater confidence, valuable experience and improved preparations for their SUKMA campaign.

“The team will also focus on maintaining fitness, staying injury-free, and delivering their best performances throughout the competition,” the statement added.

SUKMA Selangor 2026 will be a major test for Sarawak’s emerging RG talents as they look to make their mark against the country’s best young athletes.
