KUCHING: SMK (A) Sheikh Haji Othman Abdul Wahab (SHOAW) proudly commemorated 25 years of rugby excellence by hosting a special friendly match titled “Homecoming” at the Song Kheng Hai Field.
In a statement issued on Sunday (Aug 31), the school said the event was a hallmark celebration that reunited alumni from 2000 to 2024, together with the founding figures of the school’s rugby legacy, Zulkarnain Hisham Sarbini and former teacher Megat Ahmad Abdullah, who helped establish the rugby tradition at SHOAW in 2000.
“The match provided not only thrilling sporting action but also served as a platform to honour the dedication and hard work that have elevated SHOAW rugby’s reputation both within Sarawak and across Malaysia.
“Zulkarnain Hisham Sarbini, the head coach since 2000, reflected on the memorable journey of rugby at SHOAW and its significance in the lives of educators and coaches,”the statement read.
Zulkarnain’s leadership was instrumental in the team’s success, leading to multiple MSSM championships and other local tournament victories, achievements that were strongly supported by the school administration.
Former teacher Megat Ahmad Abdullah was also lauded for his unwavering support of the players in every tournament.
“The core values of integrity, teamwork, and discipline were instilled in players from a young age and continue to be the foundation of rugby culture at SHOAW.
“This homecoming event, notably held on Malaysia’s Independence Day, Aug 31, 2025, sought to kindle the spirit of independence among generations of players and supporters.
“It also offered an opportunity to revisit cherished memories and reinforce the camaraderie within the SHOAW rugby community,” the statement added.
The event culminated with a heartfelt speech of appreciation delivered by a former teacher and advisor to the Warrior Old Boys Rugby Club, followed by group photographs with the players.
These moments poignantly symbolised the enduring rugby legacy at SMK (A) SHOAW.
