KUCHING: The Sarawak Heritage Society (SHS) has expressed strong support for Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian’s recent remarks on the urgent need for flood mitigation measures at Sarawak General Hospital.

SHS president Datin Rosemarie Wong-Jabu stressed that while flood mitigation is critical, the protection of Sarawak’s heritage, particularly the Sarawak Nurses’ Quarters, is equally vital.

“We at the SHS are in robust agreement with the need for mitigation.

“Based on the reasons the good Deputy Premier has clearly articulated, we equally, and firmly believe the protection of Sarawak’s heritage is as valuable to society,” said Wong during a recent SHS Executive Committee gathering.

The Sarawak Nurses’ Quarters, a post-World War II colonial-era building, is not only a unique architectural example but also a symbol of the state’s nursing heritage.

She highlighted that the Quarters could serve as a memorial to Sarawak’s pioneering nurses.

“We sincerely believe the Nurses’ Quarters can stand as a memorial to the pioneering nurses of Sarawak. And we have articulated how in our submissions to the authorities,” she said.

The SHS has garnered over 2,800 signatures on a petition advocating for the protection of the Nurses’ Quarters, indicating strong community support. However, Rosemarie acknowledged the challenge lies in finding practical solutions.

“The challenge remains the know-how; how to get both matters addressed,” she noted.

“We understand a review is underway by DID, and we welcome, enthusiastically, any opportunity to assist further in this endeavour,” she added.
